Biography

Hans Broek is a painter exploring how history persists in landscape and architecture. His work focuses on sites connected to colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade, critically questioning the idealized, harmonious visions of Dutch Brazil presented in Frans Post’s paintings. He travels worldwide to study historical sites, which serve as primary sources for his paintings. In a long-term project on Maurits of Nassau-Siegen, he links painting, place, and historical awareness.
